What Your Child Will Learn

  1. Coin Values
Know the value of each coin
  2. Add Coins
    Add two or three coins

Common Mistakes

  • Counting coins by quantity rather than value (saying "I have 5" when holding 5p + 10p + 20p = 35p)
Always ask "How much is it WORTH?" not "How many coins?" Practise adding coin values: line up coins from largest to smallest value and add as you go.
  • Struggling to make the same amount using different coin combinations
There are many ways to make the same amount. Challenge your child: "Can you make 20p using only 5p coins? Only 2p coins? A mix?" This flexibility is key.

Tips for Parents

  • Set up a home shop with real prices (under £1). Give your child mixed coins and let them work out how to pay exactly.
  • Play "Coin Challenge" — give an amount (e.g. 38p) and see how many different ways your child can make it using coins.
  • When shopping, ask your child to estimate whether two items together will cost more or less than £1.
  • Use a clear jar for saving. Regularly tip out the coins, sort by value, and count the total together.

Key Words

  • Pence (p) — The small unit of British money — 100p = £1.
  • Pound (£) — The main unit of British money — written as £1, £2, £5.
  • Change — Money you get back when you pay more than the price.
  • Total — The full amount when all values are added together.
  • Coin — A piece of metal money — 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2.

Where This Fits

Before this topic: Children should recognise all coins and know their values, and add within 20.

After this topic: Money skills extend to giving change, calculating costs with pounds and pence, and solving multi-step money problems.

How MathCraft Teaches This

In MathCraft, Recognise Coins and Notes is taught through the Money, Data & Measure adventure track. Your child follows guided lessons with friendly characters, works through examples step by step, then practises with questions that adapt to their level.
